Christmas Island "Alternative Place of Detention" and Construction Camp is where families and children are held. As at 30 June 2012: 223 children, 429 men and 70 women were held here.

The Construction Camp is a densely packed collection of demountables known as dongas. These were intended for single occupation but
families of four have been accommodated in them. Children are also accommodated at Compound Charlie.
