Shuchang Xie

Shuchang Xie was born in 1988 in Chongqing, China. In 2009, after he finished his studies in literature at Southwest University, Chongqing, Shuchang Xie went to the University of Fine Arts Hamburg, Germany, where he studied filmmaking with Wim Wenders and Angela Schanelec, and Fine Arts with Michaela Melián. In 2014 he received a full scholarship which enabled him to study Fine Arts at Goldsmith College, University of London. Shuchang Xie works as a filmmaker, photographer and mix-media artist. His first feature film “per song” (2016) was selected and nominated from various international film festivals such as Vision du Réel, IDFA, Filmfest Hamburg, Dokfest Munich, Kasseler Dokfest etc. and won the Mega Student Award at Dokfest Munich 2017. His installations are often site-specific and use mainly time-based media such as soundtrack, radio play, sequenced photographs and video. In 2016 he held his first solo exhibition “male gaze” in Hamburg, and he published his first photo edition “hermetic poems”. Shuchang Xie works and lives currently in Hamburg.
